We know no story is ever truly done being written, but it's time to find a stopping point you can live with and send us your long story or essay for our 2027 Long Story Contest! Be sure to submit here before the LAST DAY to send us your manuscript: Thursday, October 1 by 11:59 p.m. CT.

Every fall, we accept prose manuscripts between 20 and 40 pages double-spaced (12-point font, 1-inch margins, please!) for the chance to be published as a standalone issue of IHLR. The winner receives $1,000 and is published in an e-single, full-color issue of Iron Horse that can be read for free via our ISSUU page.

You can find out more about the Long Story Contest via our web page here. We'll announce the winner of the contest in December as well. But in the meantime, make sure you send us your best (long) work!
